A new way to look at an old photograph

Color can change the way we notice a familiar photograph: a face in a family album, a street we recognize, or the clothes in an old portrait. Colorization offers a new interpretation while your black-and-white original remains unchanged.

Start with a photo that matters to you

Choose a clear scan or a well-lit photograph of the print. Bring in one image at a time, check the preview and choose Colorize photo. This tool focuses on adding colors; use restoration when scratches or fading are your main concern.

Keep both versions in view

Compare the color version with the original using the slider. Look at the overall palette, skin tones, clothes and background. The colors are estimated by AI, so choose the version that suits your photograph rather than treating it as a historical color record.

Save a color version, keep the original

Download the result as a new copy for your photo collection. Your source file is not overwritten, so the black-and-white image can stay beside the color version.

Questions before you begin

What kinds of photos can I colorize?

Start with a black-and-white digital photo, such as a family portrait, a group photo or a scanned print. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, then check the preview before choosing colorization.

Which image files are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP are supported, up to 10 MiB and 24 megapixels per image. Photos are resized to a maximum of 1536 px on the longest side. Transparent areas become white.

Is my photo uploaded when I choose it?

Choosing a file only previews it in your browser. Only when you submit is your photo sent through our server to the configured AI provider.

How many free attempts are available?

Up to 3 free AI attempts per network each day, shared by restoration and colorization. The allowance resets at 00:00 UTC. Downloads do not count. A submitted attempt may count even if processing fails; availability also depends on service capacity.

How are the colors chosen?

AI estimates a palette for the image. Treat it as a color interpretation; an original color photograph, if available, is a useful reference.

Can colorization change facial details?

It can. AI can change facial details or expressions. Compare the result with the original, particularly the eyes, mouth and face shape, before deciding to use it.

What should I check in a colorized photo?

Compare the overall palette, skin tones, clothing and background with your original. Keep the black-and-white version too, and save the color copy if you like the result.

Why can a request fail?

A file may be unsupported or damaged, the provider may be unable to process it, or a request may time out. Check the message shown in the tool before submitting again. A task admitted for processing may count toward the usage allowance even if it later fails. The website does not automatically resubmit it.
